The Law Society’s call to increase PIDA protection is commendable, but the question is… will more regulation change attitudes towards whistleblowers?
The Law Society’s view that employers see whistleblowers as problems – and its proposals to make policies standard and extend the legislation to self-employed workers – is all very good in theory. However, in reality, if it wants to protect people, rather than simply provide a remedy, what is actually required is a complete change of culture within the business.
Whistleblowers need to be seen as a positive asset that helps uncover and rectify issues rather than as ‘tell-tales’. That isn’t going to happen overnight and I am sceptical that the changes proposed will have a significant impact in practice.
